FAUGHEEN was obviously very impressive at Kempton yesterday in the Christmas Hurdle but against the opposition that was there he had to be if he is going to take on the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.
To learn afterwards that he is as short as even money to win the Champion Hurdle is an absolutely ridiculous price and to honest I think he should still be around 5/1 on what we have seen so far.
Second in he Christmas Hurdle yesterday was a horse called Purple Bay who is a grand horse but he's not a Champion Hurdle contender - he was only seventh in a Galway Hurdle.
Don't get me wrong, I do think that Faugheen is a class horse, of course he is. He has done absolutely nothing wrong and can only beat what is put in front of him, but this season there hasn't been anything put in front of him that justifies making him evens for Cheltenham.
Speaking of the Champion Hurdle and we'll, of course, get to see the last two winners of the race at Leopardstown on Monday with Hurricane Fly and Jezki taking each other on again.
I know Hurricane Fly is going to be 11 next week, but this little battle between the two horses is great for racing and creates brilliant interest amongst people who all have an opinion on who will win.
You won't get me going away from Hurricane Fly around Leopardstown on soft ground anyway.
I think he proved the last day when he won at Punchestown that he still loves it around here so while Jezki will certainly put it up to Hurricane Fly, I don't see him turning the tables back on this occasion anyway.
The Grade One Racing Post Novice Chase saw Clarcam put in an excellent performance for Gordon Elliott who is certainly a trainer in magnificent form at the moment.
Clarcam travelled well, jumped well and did nothing wrong and Gordon went on to win the bumper then as well. That is an operation that is just getting bigger and bigger and all credit to him. He is doing a great job and you certainly wouldn't rule out him having more winners before the week is out.
With Kalkir and Vautour both getting turned over at odds on, it has been a good start to the week for bookmakers!
