Rudigreen comes good to save day for Shark

IRISH trainer Shark Hanlon left it late from a six-horse raid on Sedgefield last night when he struck with the last of his runners.

It was down to Rudigreen (7/1) to make the journey from Bagenalstown a successful one when taking the 32Red Casino Handicap Chase despite being 2lb out of the handicap.

Dougie Costello produced the 10-year-old to jump into the lead at the final fence and stride away to score by two-and-a-half lengths from the 11/4 favourite My Flora.

"He's a bit of a rogue, but he's one of the ones that handled the cut in the ground," Hanlon said. "All my horses were brought for good to firm ground and to me that is yielding to soft. He handles that ground and that was the difference. It's great to go home with one winner anyway."

The day began inauspiciously for the County Carlow handler with Birzali falling at the final flight when well-beaten in the opening 32Red.com Conditional Jockeys' Maiden Hurdle.

Anjum was only eighth of nine finishers in the Phoenix Security Maiden Hurdle and then Baizically was tailed off in the Chatfields DAF Euro 6 Handicap Chase.

Do The Bookies failed to live up to his name when fifth in the Ministers Indian Restaurant Sedgefield Handicap Hurdle after showing up to the second last.

Howlett threatened to make the journey worthwhile, but had to settle for third place behind Amazing Scenes and Mr Cardle in the Molson Coors Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race.

"I was disappointed with him, but he just didn't handle the ground. The jockey said if the ground had been quicker he'd have won," said Hanlon.

The training honours went to Cholmondeley handler Donald McCain, who enjoyed a 30-1 treble with Welsh Bard (8/1), Aazif (6/5 favourite) and Ballybriggan (10/11 favourite).

Henry Brooke was in the saddle for the first with Jason Maguire on the other two.

Irish-born rider Denis O'Regan was in the wars after being unseated from Honour System at the first flight in the maiden hurdle. He was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough to have a shoulder injury checked.
