Geraghty: Sprinter can reach heights of Flyer

Barry Geraghty believes that Arkle champ Sprinter Sacre could become a racing superstar and match the incredible feats of the likes of Moscow Flyer.

The Meath native beamed after Nicky Henderson’s horse registered a facile victory.

“He just does it so easy. He settled better and he wasn’t as extravagant early, which meant that I could keep him back and not get competitive, but then Ruby made the mistake and he jumped to the front and you saw what he can do from the third last,” he said.

“He coasted in really. He could be (the next Moscow Flyer), they have different styles but he’s possibly the best.

“I mean, Moscow has done it but he takes you there. I don’t think I’ve ever ridden a horse that goes at it the way he does.

“I’ve never ridden a championship race that was that easy.

“I think Mourinho would call him ‘The Special One’.”

Geraghty admitted that the race could have been ridden in any number of different ways, but it would have still ended the same way.

“If it turned into a sprint he was going to win that – going too quick was the only thing that was going to beat him.

“It’s great to see them winging fences but you can overdo that.”

Geraghty ruled out trying the horse over further distances and possibly going for the Cheltenham Gold Cup next year.

“He has too much pace to go further, it would be like running Frankel in the Ascot Gold Cup. He’s found his niche,” he added.

“He was one of the big ones for the week and I was hoping and praying that things would go right and they did.”
