Cheltenham honour late Hughes with award

Cheltenham will remember the late Dessie Hughes at next month's National Hunt Festival as the Irish Independent-sponsored Leading Trainer Award will be named in his honour.

Hughes had made his mark at the Cheltenham Festival as both a trainer and earlier as a jockey and enjoyed some memorable days when winning the Champion Hurdle on Monksfield in 1979 and the Gold Cup on Davy Lad in 1977 before joining an elite group of people to have both ridden and trained a Champion Hurdle winner as Hardy Eustace won the race in 2004 and then again in 2005.

"The whole family are very much looking forward to the Festival," said his son Richard.

His sister Sandra will have runners there after taking over her father's licence.
