Bolger eyeing Derby duty for Guineas hero Dawn Approach

Trainer Jim Bolger confirmed Qipco 2000 Guineas hero Dawn Approach will be aimed towards the Investec Derby at Epsom on June 1.

The unbeaten juvenile produced a brilliant performance to win the first Classic of the season on Saturday by five lengths. Godolphin's colt will now bid to emulate his sire, New Approach, who claimed the Derby five years ago.

Bolger said: "Dawn Approach has come out of the 2000 Guineas in excellent shape and I couldn't be more pleased with him."

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "His temperament and demeanour are excellent and he relaxes in his races which means he has a better chance of seeing out the mile and a half."

Trainer Roger Charlton has identified an Irish option for Thistle Bird after her encouraging comeback effort at Newmarket on Sunday.

Thistle Bird came of age last season, winning three Listed races and finishing second in Goodwood's Celebration Mile, and has been kept in training by owner Lady Rothschild.

She was not beaten far into third by Dank in the Dahlia Stakes over the Guineas weekend.

"She travelled a bit too well and tired in the closing stages but it was an excellent run first time out and she showed that as a five-year-old old she has retained all her enthusiasm," the Beckhampton handler said. "She might travel to the Curragh for the Abu Dhabi Stakes, Group Three on May 25."
