Waterford banking on better future

DéISE GAA chiefs are hoping to secure a €650,000 bank loan in a bid to haul the Waterford county board back from the financial brink.

Facing a deficit in the region of €700,000, Waterford officers are undertaking a number of initiatives including a levy on its 48 clubs and various ticket schemes.

But the primary focus is on a loan from AIB, repayable over 10 years, with chairman Tom Cunningham claiming the board would have to “close up shop” if its proposals are rejected.

Around 50pc of Waterford clubs have so far paid the levy, which varies from from €1,500 for junior clubs to €2,500 for senior, while details of the proposed season ticket scheme for 2013 were presented to a meeting of the board.

This latest twist in Waterford’s financial plight has echoes in Kildare, where it emerged this week that its county board is facing complete loss of financial independence for the foreseeable future.

The GAA’s Central Council has proposed that a new committee be given exclusive powers to make financial decisions without requiring the consent of clubs, as they seek to reduce a cumulative deficit of €710,000.
