Sutcliffe stars for Daly's men

DUBLIN'S hurlers turned in another strong pre-league display on the challenge match circuit yesterday, beating Tipperary by 1-21 to 1-19 in Nenagh.

Having drawn with Clare two Sundays back, Anthony Daly's man continued their preparations for next Friday night's Walsh Cup opener with UCD in Parnell Park (7.30) with inspired displays from Paul Ryan, Eamonn Dillon and in particular, Danny Sutcliffe.

Paul Schutte, who missed almost all of last year with a knee ligament injury, played at full-back as Tipp raced into a 0-8 to 0-1 lead after just 15 minutes but a goal from Sutcliffe helped propel Dublin into a two-point half-time advantage as they belatedly found their range.

Corner man Ryan (0-10, 6fs) and Dillon (0-3) helped themselves to 13 points between them and Tipp were relied largely on the inspired form of goalkeeper Darren Gleeson, who made a number of impressive saves from close range from a selection of Dublin forwards to ensure a tight finish.

Eoin Kelly and Shane Bourke were introduced to the fray to telling effect for Tipperary, with the latter netting for the Premier after 56 minutes but points from Man of the Match Sutcliffe and Johnny McCaffrey secured the result for Daly's men.

NOEL McGRATH bagged six points from play and 11 in total as UCD squeezed past LAOIS and into a Walsh Cup quarter-final with Dublin next Friday night in Parnell Park (7.30).

The Belfield College, for whom Oisín Gough lined out at midfield and Rory O'Carroll at full-back, won 0-15 to 1-11.

In Blackwater, WEXFORD required extra-time to see off DIT and make sure of their quarter-final clash with Offaly next Sunday. Kilkenny minor and U21 star Michael Maloney bagged 1-12 (1-9f) while Dublin's Conor McCormack also chipped in with 1-2 for DIT, for whom Liam Rushe lined at centre-back.

They were a man up when Mick O'Regan was sent off for a second yellow card midway through the second-half and pressed into a 2-14 to 0-16 lead but points from Harry Kehoe and Paul Morris sent the match into extra-time where a goal from Kehoe proved decisivie.

In the other Walsh Cup matches CARLOW beat ANTRIM comfortably, 1-17 to 0-10 while NUIG were 3-15 to 0-16 victors over WESTMEATH.
