St Brigid's earn deserved draw

O'TOOLE'S 1-15

A superb point from Paul Winters with the last puck of the game earned St Brigid's a deserved draw against O'Toole's in their Dublin Senior 'A' Hurling Championship Group 3 encounter at Parnell Park last night.

The Larriers opened up brightly with Philly Brennan recording their first score with a fine effort in the third minute and Liam Ryan doubled that lead within a minute as Brigid's initially struggled to find their rhythm.

Despite Pat Rohan halving their deficit soon after, St Brigid's were indebted to goalkeeper Alan Nolan, who raced quickly from his line to deny Paul Bradshaw a certain goal.

O'Toole's added to their lead through Michael Cunningham, but they failed to take advantage of a generous amount of possession as they were reeled in through successive points by Brendan McInerney and Winters.

Conor Carton and Winters exchanged frees as the half progressed before the latter raced clear unopposed in the 15th minute before applying a clinical finish to the net from 10 yards.

O'Toole's responded well to that setback, however, with Ger O'Meara especially prominent and three unanswered points from Conor Carton preceded a glorious score by Peadar Carton as his side regained the lead.

However, St Brigid's finished the half in the ascendancy and two frees by Winters ensured a narrow 1-6 to 0-8 interval lead for the Blanchardstown men.

The poaching talents of Peadar Carton handed O'Toole's a dream start to the second half as Conor Carton's free fell short and while Nolan saved the initial attempt, Carton was on hand to sweep home from six yards.

Rohan kept Brigid's in contention, adorning an impressive display with a brace of fine scores, but Conor Carton's accuracy from placed balls kept O'Toole's in front, with the wing-forward landing a sublime sideline at the end of the third quarter.

It was nip and tuck until the final whistle, with Conor Carton's 63rd-minute free appearing the decisive score before Winters embellished a wonderful display with an unerring score from distance in the last seconds.
