Ryan: Doyle not injured but yet to commit

JASON Ryan has clarified that Johnny Doyle is not currently injured and that the 36-year-old has still yet to make a decision on whether or not to commit to the Kildare squad for 2014, writes Conor McKeon.

The Allenwood man was included on a list of players who are currently injured which was published on the Kildare county board's official website last week below a 36-strong panel for the commencement of the league after Ryan dropped 14 members of an extended January squad.

"Johnny's not injured. Johnny has his own family to take care of and what not. So there is no decision to be made there as to whether he's playing or not playing or anything like that," Ryan explained.

"We speak regularly and he's very interested in how the group do. It has been a big part of his life for quite some time. But at this moment, he has his family to take care of.

Asked whether he would attempt to coax another season out of Doyle, Ryan insisted: "There's no coaxing. Our sport is kind of a case where, if you want to play, you play. And if you don't want to play, you don't want to play.

"And if anybody needs to be coaxed, it's not for the right reasons.

"Johnny Doyle is one of the most honest, hard-working, straight individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. So there is no need for coaxing or anything like that.

"When the time is right for him to make a decision, he'll make a decision. And I, for one, am not in any position to ever tell that man what to do."
