Rohan to the rescue

AN injury-time point from Pat Rohan earned 14-man St Brigid's a deserved draw with county champions Kilmacud Crokes in their Dublin SHC Group C encounter at Parnell Park last night.

The score completed an impressive comeback from the Blanchardstown men who trailed by five points with seven minutes remaining.

A goal from the impressive Daire Plunkett kick-started their revival, with Rohan's angled drive narrowly sailing over Matt Collins' crossbar.

There was scant evidence of such a tight encounter in a pedestrian opening half as Crokes opened up with a brace of scores from Sean McGrath and a Ross O'Carroll score, which left Kilmacud two points clear by the end of the first quarter.

Paddy McAvinue and Colin Lynch replied for Brigid's but two goals in quick succession by Oisin O'Rorke and Brian Hanamy looked to have handed Crokes the momentum that had eluded them for large parts of the half.

However, Brigid's were beginning to enjoy a greater degree of possession and Paul Winters offered them renewed ambition when dancing through the Crokes defence for an excellent individual goal in the 29th minute.

The second half was distinctly sub-standard with Brigid's spurning numerous chances to reduce their arrears through poor shot execution. The poverty of the general play was reflected in the first score of the half from play arriving as late as the 49th minute thanks to a tidy Barry O'Rorke point.

Far from driving Kilmacud to victory, it galvanised Brigid's – who had David Smyth dismissed for two bookable offences – for one final effort, with Plunkett's goal preceding late scores from McAvinue and Rohan that gave the final scoreline a more equitable slant.
