Portlaoise survive major scare

LEINSTER favourites, Portlaoise, made heavy work in making the last eight of the AIB Leinster club SFC, needing extra-time and a late Conor Boyle point to put Louth's St Patrick's, away by 2-12 to 1-14 at O'Moore Park.

They now face surprise Wicklow champions, St Mary's, who caused the shock of the weekend by beating Rathnew, 2-5 to 0-10 in Aughrim.

Athy's victory over Edenderry means they will face Old Leighlin of Carlow in the last eight while Garrycastle are already through to the semi-final after their comprehensive win over Longford Slashers.

In hurling, Oulart-The Ballagh stayed on course to make amends for last year's Leinster disappointment and meet Offaly champions, Coolderry, in the final after beating Clough-Ballacoola by 3-12 to 2-11.
