Plunkett's power past the Larriers

ST OLIVER Plunkett's/Eoghan Ruadh confirmed their heavy favourites tag with a comfortable 10-point win over O'Toole's in their Evening Herald Dublin SFC fourth round encounter at Parnell Park on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the winning margin, it was a far from perfect display by Mick Galvin's men and they only showed glimpses of their undoubted forward prowess during a brief spell towards the end of the first quarter in which they kicked four points in as many minutes from Garreth Smith, Bernard Brogan, Anthony Moyles and Jason Sherlock.

Other than that, it was a fitful performance from the winners, missing the guile and endeavour of Alan Brogan (knee injury), although younger brother Bernard still managed to accrue 1-7 over the hour.

O'Toole's laboured in attack throughout with their difficulties reflected by their opening score from play arriving as late as the 48th minute through Michael Healy, and although they enjoyed a healthy amount of possession, a shock result never looked likely given their travails in the forward line.

It was Brogan who opened the scoring in the second minute and although Healy levelled matters with a fourth-minute free, it proved the last O'Toole's score for for 21 minutes as Plunkett's began to drive incessantly toward the church end.

Smith and Brogan pushed the Navan Road men two clear prior to their purple patch and despite a David Mooney '45' in the 25th minute, Brogan landed two more points from play to ensure his side a healthy 0-9 to 0-2 interval advantage.

The second-half failed to spark with Healy landing two close-in frees for O'Toole's while at the opposite end Smith and Shane Dunne knocked over quality scores with Conor Daly blazing a glorious goal chance wide after David Hoare had denied David Matthews with a brave stop in the 50th minute.

The goal duly arrived six minutes later with Hoare culpable after a poor kick-out with Sherlock placing Brogan free for an emphatic finish with late scores from Peadar Carton and Christopher Mulligan of cosmetic value to the final scoreline.
