O'Neill's late goal crucial as Wicklow rock Royal County

Saturday's Christy Ring Cup quarter-final at St Conleth's Park, Newbridge ended in excitement as Jonathan O'Neill's 73rd-minute goal from an acute angle snatched a famous 3-13 to 1-18 victory for Wicklow over 14-man Meath.

The difference between the sides was the Wicklow full-forward line, with Andy O'Brien and Enan Glynn doing a lot of damage.

When Meath's Peter Durnin was sent off in the 45th minute it looked like curtains for the Royals, and O'Neill struck the decisive blow from close to the endline.

Meanwhile, Dan Carthy's late goal put the seal on Westmeath's impressive 2-21 to 1-18 victory over Down in Navan. The Lakemen were full value for their six-point margin. Brendan Murtagh led the scoring charge with eight points but it was a brace of goals, one in each half, that were the key ingredients in Westmeath's tasty dish.

Semi-finals: Kerry v Wicklow; Kildare v Westmeath. Games on Sat, June 5.
