NAOMH Olaf survived the concession of three goals to get their AHL3 campaign off to a winning start against Kevin's at Páirc Uí Bhriain on Sunday morning.
A powerful display in the first half saw them leading by 0-8 to 1-2 at the break, with Kevin's goal, through Mannix Lawlor, coming on the stroke of half-time. Johnny McGrath was prominent in that opening period for the winners, as was Aidan O'Mahony, who showed great composure throughout from placed balls.
Olafs continued to reel off scores after the interval, but two more goals from Kevin's David Reid and Martin Kenny cut the gap to just two points entering the final quarter. However, a goal of their own through Mark O'Donnell and further points by McGrath, O'Mahony and Eoin Murphy ensured the home side got the victory.
Also outstanding for the winners were midfielder Gavin Stapleton and centre-back Declan O'Dwyer.
One of the performances of the day came in Ringsend, where visitors St Peregrine's saw off Clanna Gael Fontenoy, 1-18 to 1-7. A belter of a goal from 25 metres by Colm Foley set the Blakestown men on their way, while the unerring accuracy of Cillian Byrnes was also a factor.
When Clanna Gael did try and make inroads in the opposition half, they were met with fierce resistance from the likes of full back Shane Sweeney.
Peregrine's will be hoping to go far in both league and championship in 2014, and this represented a statement of their intent.
There were also wins for Thomas Davis and Naomh Barróg, while St Vincent's and Sylvester's shared the points in Páirc Naomh Uinsionn, as did Na Fianna and Castleknock in Glasnevin.
In AHL4, Round Tower, Clondlakin hit four goals through a Brian McLoughlin brace and one each from Aaron Wynne and Alex Derby in Clondlakin to see off St Jude's. In a fine game of hurling, the home side's panel proved the difference as all five subs used had the desired impact.
