THE depiction of Waterford as hurling's answer to Donegal has been questioned by Nicky English, who believes the Déise's defensive system isn't radically different to many others, merely more "exaggerated", writes Frank Roche.
"I'm not sure what the Donegal system is, they probably have more back," said the Tipperary legend.
"But really what Waterford are doing is their half forwards are very mobile, they come back into midfield and then they try and support the two up front.
"But it is not necessarily playing two sweepers or three sweepers.
"Will it filter down? I think most county teams are playing similarly at the moment. It's there already. And a lot of that is coming out of the third level colleges teams.
"Waterford IT and UCC, the more successful ones, have been playing like that and they are creating a bit of space in the full-forward line.
"Kilkenny are doing the same. It's not as easy to recognise because it is not as exaggerated as what Waterford are doing, but it is similar enough."
English believes Brian Cody & Co should be "wary" of Waterford in this Sunday's All-Ireland SHC semi-final.
"Ultimately I expect Kilkenny to win it, but I think Waterford aren't to be discounted," he ventured. "They have nothing to lose, which will be much easier for them to play than the last day (against Dublin) or in the Munster final (against Tipperary). I think they'll be dangerous."
