Morrissey goal proves difference for minors

AN injury-time goal from Laura Morrissey handed Dublin a hard-earned 2-10 to 1-10 victory over Offaly in their Leinster Minor Championship round-robin encounter in Birr last Sunday lunchtime.

Dublin showed understandable signs of rustiness in what was their first championship outing for the year but the attitude and application of the Blues was what encouraged manager Paul Beecher the most.

"We were reasonably happy with what we saw in terms of effort. However, our touch wasn't what it could have been which is perhaps understandable as we have only really been back training as a group for the past two weeks," he said.

Dublin started in the ascendancy with Orla Beagan in superb form from play and placed balls, with the Lucan Sarsfields player accruing seven points in the opening half.

She received valuable support from both full-back Niamh Byrne and centre-back Hannah Hegarty while Martha O'Donoghue and Zenouska Murphy combined well at centrefield as the visitors enjoyed a well-deserved 0-9 to 0-5 interval advantage.

However, Offaly turned the tide in the second half, hitting 1-2 without reply to overtake their opponents and they played the more convincing camogie after the break.

Dublin needed some inspiration as the contest seemed to be slipping from their grasp and it was provided by Lucan's Amy Conroy, who landed a critical goal ten minutes from time.

dramatic

After Beagan levelled matters near the end, a dramatic conclusion ensued with Morrissey getting on the end of Beagan's delivery to hand Dublin a win in their opening group game, with Wexford next on the agenda on Sunday week.

"The win gives us something to work on and that game will bring us on. We'll look to build on that display," said Beecher.

Sadly, there was less positive news emanating from Mullingar as Dublin's Minor 'B' team succumbed to Westmeath by 2-8 to 2-4.
