Mobhi Boys edge 'boden

Na Fianna captured the Dublin U16 Division 1 title on Saturday afternoon, thanks to a narrow 1-9 to 1-8 victory over Ballyboden St Enda's at Mobhi Road.

These two great Dublin clubs have been the dominant force at underage level for much of the past few years and so it was no surprise that they once again threw up a hugely entertaining game.

But, in fairness to the Glasnevin men, they have been the outstanding team of the season in the grade as their exceptional group of players had a 100 per cent record.

That fine run included them winning the championship earlier on in the year, so it was fitting that they would finish the campaign in style.

They got off to a shaky start when poor shooting let them down. But a goal from the ever-reliable Alistair Fitzgerald (he finished with 1-3) at the end of the first quarter settled them as they led by 1-5 to 0-4 at the break. Glen O'Reilly was also in superb form, helping himself to 0-4, and he slotted some fine scores to push the winners further in front. Aaron Byrne was another who caught the eye.

However, Ballyboden are a fine side in their own right and they were not prepared to go down without a fight. They struck a goal midway through the second half to set up a pulsating final 20 minutes.

It remained nip and tuck from there on, but Na Fianna showed all their experience to hold on for the win and crown a very special year.
