Michael Carton quits Dubs squad
DUBLIN hurlers have suffered a setback ahead of Saturday's All-Ireland qualifier against Limerick with confirmation that long-serving defender Michael Carton has quit the panel.
The O'Toole's clubman, 30, has made his decision in the aftermath of Saturday's win over Laois, when he was an unused sub even though regular full-back Peter Kelly remained sidelined through injury.
Carton replaced the hamstrung Kelly during Dublin's drawn Leinster opener against Galway and started the replay when the entire full-back line came under torrid pressure.
He was wing-back when the Dubs created Leinster title history in 2013, his consistent form earning an All Star nomination.
This season he was utilised primarily as a full-back by new boss Ger Cunningham.
There is better news concerning Niall McMorrow, who has resumed full training this week after a lengthy absence due to a thumb tendon injury.
The Ballyboden St Enda's man had established his midfield starting claims during the latter league stages.
McMorrow sat out Dublin's first three SHC outings and management have cautioned that the Thurles showdown with Limerick may come "too early" but if his colleagues advance to the quarter-finals, he should be back in contention.
