Leinster chief Delaney shoots down Dub calls

LEINSTER Council Secretary, Michael Delaney, has claimed that support for elements of Dublin’s ‘Unleashing The Blue Wave’ is minimal and says the capital is unlikely to be granted its request of being treated as a province for administration and funding terms.

Any motion to that effect would require a two-thirds majority to pass Congress and Delaney insisted other counties would be reluctant to grant Dublin a larger slice of the funding pie, stating: “turkeys don’t vote for Christmas”.

“Dublin will always be a Leinster county and okay, they made a very good case for getting more finance but they won’t become another province,” he added, in direct contrast to the stated opinion of GAA chief-executive, Páraic Duffy. “Not in my time anyway. We have the 12 counties and they’ll happily be one of ours.”

“Dublin, I won’t say they’re just another county, but Meath and Kildare are growing almost as swiftly as Dublin, the audiences, population as well. Okay, Dublin have a good case and they have been treated separately and will continue to be treated separately but they’ll never be a fifth province.”
