ST JUDE'S booked their place in the last-16 of the Evening Herald Dublin SFC at Newcastle last night, but they were made to work for it by a dogged Lucan Sarsfields side.
Indeed, the Lucan men will reflect on an opening half with much regret having shot eight wides when aided with a strong breeze. But that is not to take away from the winners, who were superbly organised in defence, while in the likes of Ronan Joyce and the McManamon brothers in attack, they had the firepower required to see out the tie.
Darren Gallagher opened the scoring for the Templeogue men with a free into the wind before Emmet Ó Conghaile got Lucan off the mark in the 10th minute.
The sides were locked at 0-3 apiece approaching the interval. However, Jude's found another gear to move 0-6 to 0-3 clear by the break thanks to a brace from Darren Gallagher and a fine effort from Brendan McManamon.
The same McManamon exchanged scores with Ó Conghaile on the restart before Lucan would embark on their most productive period of the game. Two points from Declan O'Shaughnessy, a free from Diarmuid Gallagher and a wonderful curling effort by sub Brendan O'Neill put the west Dublin men ahead with ten minutes remaining.
Jude's rallied, however, and regained the lead almost immediately thanks to brace from Joyce which sandwiched a close range effort from by Kevin McManamon.
Lucan responded when O'Neill hit another wonder effort but it was not to be. The deadly trio struck again as Joyce and the McManamons all raised the white flag in injury-time for victory.
