Goals prove the key as Vinnies cruise past Syls

St Vincent's overcame a stubborn St Sylvester's challenge when confirming a nine-point victory in their Dublin Senior Football Championship second round tie at Parnell Park last night.

The reigning holders started on the front foot with Ruairi Treanor opening their account with a fine score off his left foot in the second minute before Shane Carty doubled that advantage three minutes later.

However, Vincent's were rocked in the sixth minute as Ross Hazley put Eoin Fanning through on goal and although the initial attempt struck the crossbar, Alan Foy was on hand to plant a low finish to the net despite a plethora of defenders on the line.

Like true champions, the Marino men responded admirably to that body blow and they levelled matters instantly through a close-in free by Tomás Quinn.

Further points followed from Gavin Burke and Ciarán Dorney, and despite Michael McCarthy replying for Syls, a gap developed courtesy of a stroke of genius from Diarmuid Connolly in the 13th minute.

Connolly (pictured) received the ball at centrefield and after turning adroitly, he galloped through the heart of the Sylvester's defence before exchanging passes with Quinn to volley home from eight yards.

The Malahide outfit finished the half strongly with points by Hazley, Gary Sweeney and a Dominic McDonnell free trimming their deficit to just two points (1-7 to 1-5) by the break.

Treanor made an even greater start to the second half when netting from Connolly's pass in the 32nd minute, and the latter once again delivered the scoring pass four minutes later as Carty found the net with ease, effectively settling the entertaining contest in the process.
