Fitness helps Davis along road to glory

THE Thomas Davis manager, Stephen Bates, is a fitness expert by profession.

He had the Kiltipper Kids flying in Saturday's Junior 'A' Championship final.

This is his first gig in ladies football. Niall Kelly and Mary McGrath are his co-mentors.

Thomas Davis were in control from the first bell.

"We made a good start with the breeze and overall it was an excellent display," Bates reflected.

He was just as impressed with the industry against the strong wind.

"The girls stuck at their task very well and eventually we were able to power on and make sure of victory."

The two teams share an interesting history.

"We won the cup last year, beating Lucan in the final, but then they pipped us for the league in the last game of the season.

"But this is the one we really wanted. We have had many disappointments over the years. Three seasons ago we lost the championship final and the players were heartbroken.

"But we regrouped after that and they put in the work. Winning the Junior Championship was our goal this year.

"Now we have a Leinster campaign to look forward to. It's great to be representing Dublin.

"We have a few games left in the league. We are in a safe position in the table, so we have no worries there.

"Our aim now is to consolidate our position in the Intermediate Championship and eventually push on into senior."
