Fianna fly flag for the Northside

THE semi-final parings of the 2011 of the Dublin under-21 'A' hurling championship are now known after the quarter-finals reached their conclusion on Saturday afternoon.

At St Mobhi Road, Na Fianna just edged out their local rivals St Vincent's in a real nail-biter, 0-10 to 1-6.

Paul Grey was the chief marksman for the winners with a 0-6 haul, two of which came courtesy of brilliantly executed sideline balls.

IMPRESSING

With their half-backs impressing, Vincent's were in the ascendancy for most of the opening half, thanks in the main to a stunning goal from John Hetherton, a Dublin minor of 2010.

But Na Fianna dug deep to grind out their victory with Seán Burke and Martin Quilty in particular standing out alongside the aforementioned Grey.

The Glasnevin men, who lost Dublin under-21 of this year Odhrán ó Maoileidigh to injury (hamstring) will now face Ballyboden St Enda's in the last four, after they also came out on top of a neighbourly battle when they saw off Ballinteer St John's 1-14 to 0-11.

Dublin minor Aodhán Clabby was in fine scoring form for St John's, but he could not prevent his side slipping to a defeat to a very strong looking Boden unit at Marley Park.

The sides were level at the break and with the home team having the advantage of the wind in the second period, it appeared that Ballyboden were in trouble.

But a goal from Finian McDonagh set them up for the win and Niall Ryan made no mistake from a number of late frees to seal the result.

DOMINANCE

Elsewhere, the favourites for the competition given their dominance of the minor 'A' grade in recent years, Kilmacud Crokes, accounted for St Jude's in an eight-goal thriller 4-14 to 4-8 with Dublin under-21 Kevin O'Loughlin the star of the show.

They will go head-to-head with Cuala for a place in the decider, after the Dalkey men received a walkover from Parnell's.

The Nells were unable to field a team after they saw their squad decimated by injury and illness and were without up to 15 of their players.
