Electric Eoin display ruthless streak to overcome brave St Peter's

COLAISTE EOIN produced a clinical second-half performance when outclassing St Peter's Wexford by 11 points in their Leinster Colleges Senior 'A' Football Championship quarter-final in Hollymount last Saturday.

With the sides deadlocked at 0-5 apiece at the interval, the gaelscoil assumed complete control upon the restart with goals in the final 10 minutes from Conn Ó Ceallacháin and Colm Ó Néill.

"Although it was tight at half-time, I felt that once we got our noses in front, then we would be hard stopped," said manager Pádraig Mac Donncha.

"The lads really took control of the game in the second half and they pushed on with the scores coming far easier than they did early on, which was very positive.

"St Peter's were a very decent team and they created goal chances against us. We could well have been in trouble on another day if they'd managed to take those opportunities," he said.

The win was even more impressive given the 39th dismissal of Cian Ó Riain Broin but even then the visitors had firm control through points from Lúc Ó Giolláin and Ó Ceallacháin.

The latter effectively settled the contest when netting in the 52nd minute with Ó Néill widening the gap between the sides soon after.

Although St Peter's added some late pressure, all they could manage was a solitary consolation point from Tony Smith as Coláiste Eoin benefited from positive contributions by Rian Mac Giolla Bhríde and Fionn Ó Riain Broin.

Coláiste Eoin will now face current provincial holders St Patrick's Navan in the semi-final on Saturday week with Mac Donncha expecting another tight encounter following last year's narrow defeat at a similar stage.

"St Pat's are a fine team and we are going reasonably well ourselves at the moment so I expect another close encounter with very little between the teams by the end," he said.

First up for the school's many dual players, however, is a Corn Uí Dhúill semi-final against St Kieran's Kilkenny on Saturday as they hope to reach their first provincial hurling final in the 'A' grade.
