Dillons to fore as Gaels prove extra special

KEALIN DILLON was the Trinity Gaels hero as his tally of 2-2 was crucial for Trinity Gaels in their action-packed Dublin SFC first round extra-time victory in St Margaret's last night.

The Donaghmede men made by far the better start with the ever dependable Brendan O'Brien clipping over back-to-back scores before a long delivery from Dean Kelly saw Dillon pounce for his first goal after 20 minutes to push his side 1-6 to 0-1 clear.

But with Dublin U21 captain, Kevin O'Brien, beginning to dictate play from wing back, Mearnóg were soon back into the game when awarded a penalty on 23 minutes.

Gaels keeper, Craig Reilly saved brilliantly but was was helped two minutes later when Stephen McHale crashed home a terrific effort and by the interval Mearnóg had closed the gap to two points (1-6 to 1-4).

A balanced second half led to extra-time after Mearnóg's John Madden brought sides level with ten minutes to go and a point from Graham Dillon was matched by Brendan Colreavy to force extra-time (1-10 to 2-7).

Again there was nothing between the sides in extra-time until crucially Dillon grabbed his second goal with just two minutes remaining on the clock.

The Donaghmede side will now face Na Fianna, victors over Fingal Ravens on Wednesday night, in the second round of the Dublin SFC.
