DCU find the extra gears

DCU advanced to the semi-final of the Independent.ie Sigerson Cup following their hard-fought 1-11 to 0-11 quarter-final extra time victory away against St Mary's of Belfast yesterday.

St Mary's were reduced to 14 men in the 29th minute when Ryan Johnston was sent off (straight red card) but the Belfast University still held the upperhand for that opening period and led 0-8 to 0-3 at the interval.

An Aidan Forker point ten minutes after the restart strengthened Mary's advantage and DCU looked in real trouble.

However, the Glasnevin men finally found their spark with a Donal Wynn goal in the 44th minute helping them back into the contest.

The sides were still evenly balanced at half-time in extra-time before points from goalkeeper Tadhg Lowe ('45'), Colm Begley and Simon McCoy saw DCU into the last four.
