Bastick wades in with late winner for the Synger

TEMPLEOGUE SYNGE STREET 1-15; ST SYLVESTER'S 2-9

BEFORE throw-in last night, the sweet scent of a barbeque drifted across O'Toole Park. This first round Dublin SFC tie turned out to be just as enticing.

You'd travel many roads to see a better game, or a finer winning goal, which came from the left boot of Dublin's Denis Bastick, a minute from the end of normal time.

Declan Treanor had flown in from Paris earlier in the day.

"We are delighted with the result," said Templeogue/SS manager, Dave Cullen. "Sylvester's are one of the top sides and we knew we faced an uphill battle. Yet we have a good spirit, and everybody worked hard. And like the Brigid's game last year, nobody was expecting us to win."

The evening didn't begin too well for the Hoops. Syls started like the Malahide Express. They were 1-3 to no score ahead inside the opening 12 minutes. Darren Clarke cracked in an absolute beauty at the pitch and putt end.

Once Synger donned the running shoes, there was no stopping them. Conor McKiernan was an inspirational figure, and Fergal O'Gara had a splendid hour. Templeogue didn't waste much possession, shooting just four wides. Syls shot 11.

Remarkably, eight points without reply saw Templeogue lead at the break, 0-8 to 1-3. They were applauded into the dressing-room. On target were Fergal O'Gara (3), the brother Eoin (2), Cathal Morley, Conor McKiernan and Ger Vickery.

Syls got a foot-hold early in the second half. The tussle was level on 39 minutes. Fergal O'Gara then hit two points before two Clarke frees and Conor Daly's goal put the Malahide men into the lead.

Syls were ahead by two when Bastick gathered possession to the right of the posts and moved inside. With everybody expecting him to pop over, he kept beating the tackles before guiding low to the right-hand corner.

The O'Garas added the custard creams. Another story from the steeple for Mary Black.
