Ballinteer promotion guaranteed in style

HISTORY for Ballinteer St John's last night as they travelled home from Raytown with their prized Dublin Division 1 AHL ticket.

Victory over Clanna Gael Fontenoy (2-18 to 2-9) sees them in the big league for the first time, and they'll now meet fellow promoted club, Naomh Mearnóg, for the medals in the Division 2 final.

"We are absolutely thrilled," remarked mentor, Seán Lane. "It's a reward for all the hard work of the players and the management.

"It's a proud night for the club, and I think it's a wonderful achievement for the players who didn't lose a match, winning eight and drawing two. That's good going for senior hurling. We were the only side in the division to remain unbeaten."

Ballinteer played some crisp hurling down by the seaside. They were solid at the back and industrious throughout the field. Joe Maher, Fergal Chambers and Seánie Lane contributed handsomely on the scoreboard.

In Division 1, Crumlin had a sparkling win over St Brigid's in Pearse Park. John Cullen, Adam McGreal and Darren Whelan were outstanding for the hosts, who had three points to spare.

Crumlin's vital goal came from Cathal McGrath. Whelan hit a sackful of points, and also on the mark were David Donnelly and McGreal, who scored three points apiece. Shane Martin and Shane Ryan sent over two points each, while Stephen Dunne and Philip Murphy also added to the tally.

There was drama on the Mobhi Road as Na Fianna secured a late, late draw against O'Toole's, who had gone two points clear as the final whistle approached.

But the Glasnevin side brought it back to one, and right on the bell, Richie Frayne drilled over the equaliser to loud applause.

There was also rich excitement as Lucan had a narrow home success against Cuala. Johnny McCaffrey was outstanding for the Sars. Mark Schutte got the goal for Cuala, who had notable displays from Seán Barron, Kevin Waldron and Dan Holden.
