Scott Evans completed the best year of his career when he reached the final of the Forza Irish Open at the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown last weekend.

Evans had blazed his way through the earlier rounds, but the final proved one match too far and he lost to emerging star Fabian Roth of Germany 2-1.

Last July Evans, who has been based in Denmark for his entire professional career, made it to the quarter-finals at the Rio Olympics - the best international performance by an Irish badminton player.

There was disappointment for top seeds Sam Magee and Chloe Magee in the mixed doubles, whose Irish Open jinx continued when they lost in the second round.

Making it to the quarter-finals of the men's doubles were Sam Magee and Josh Magee. Also playing was the junior pairing of Nhat Nguyen and Paul Reynolds, who went out in the second round.

The next major outing for the Irish team is the European Mixed Team finals in Poland next February.
