Ashbourne Cup sparks special memories

THE Centenary Ashbourne Cup takes place this weekend. DCU are the hosts.

The launch was at the GAA Museum. Highly appropriate. The tournament has a deep tradition.

It was the first national camogie competition. The memories last a lifetime.

Lord Ashbourne donated the trophy. UCD beat UCC in Dublin in the first final in 1915.

UL are the holders and favourites. They beat WIT in the final. WIT were going for their sixth successive crown. WIT are managed by the Top Cat, Ann Downey.

DCU will also be in the mix with UCC, NUG and UL. UCD last took the prize in 2008. The Ashbourne final is on Sunday (3.30).

The action begins at noon on Saturday for the Ashbourne, Purcell and Fr Meagher competitions.

A special reunion has been organised. Old games will be relived.

The Ashbourne has walked on through the wind and the rain .... even the snow.

Quality is assured.

It's a 100th birthday party not to be missed.
