A special €15 coin commemorating Irish Nobel Prize winner Ernest Walton is to be issued by the Central Bank next week.

The coin, displayed here by Eimear O'Donovan, recognises Walton's groundbreaking achievements in the world of physics.

The Irishman shared the 1951 Nobel physics prize for his work on transforming the nucleus of atoms.

The Walton coin was displayed yesterday at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition in the RDS.

"The design on the coin gives an artist's impression and explanation to the equation we all know, e=mc2," Central Bank director of credit institutions supervision Sharon Donnery said.

The Bank has also collaborated with the Young Scientist Exhibition on a special award in recognition of Walton's achievements. The award winners will be announced today.
