FORMER Fair City actor Peter Vollebregt is set to make a dramatic splash in Britain after landing a new starring role in EastEnders.

The Dublin actor made his first appearance in Albert Square last week in a storyline that is set to generate huge heat.

The Trinity College graduate (47) plays the controversial role of Irishman Allen Conlon in the hit BBC soap and explained that his storyline will initially revolve around the Masood family.

Allen claims he can cure Syed Masood of his homosexuality and though Syed's family are sceptical, he insists it is possible to re-educate him.

Peter said: "The Masoods' storyline is a highly sensitive one at the moment, dealing with complex issues of religion and sexuality, and Allen is going to throw a real cat amongst the pigeons. I'm anticipating a lot of reaction, both positive and negative, from the public to Allen."

Peter said he has always been a massive fan of EastEnders and is thrilled with his latest part.

"From day one everyone has been so friendly and welcoming," he said.

Peter's face will be familiar to Irish audiences as he has had numerous roles on TV here, including parts in Glenroe and Ballykissangel.

But his most memorable role was as Eoghan's partner Andrew Taylor on Fair City in 1999. The part saw Peter's character comfort Eoghan after he assisted the suicide of his first partner Simon when he contracted AIDS.

Since relocating to London six years ago, Peter has worked consistently on top programmes, including Spooks, The Bill, and Rosemary And Thyme.

Peter said he has no idea how long his character will be in EastEnders -- but he is looking forward to causing a lot of trouble in the Square.

"EastEnders are rightly protective of their storylines and, in this case, even I am not fully aware of what the future holds for my character, so I am just as excited as the viewers to find out what happens next," he said.

Peter is also hoping for big screen success this summer after nabbing a role in new US blockbuster Super Eruption, about a massive volcano.
