Sharon Stone, the Hollywood actress, has compared her love life as being similar to that of the barren Californian Mojave desert.

The 52 year-old Basic Instinct and Catwoman star, who has been married and divorced three times, confessed she liked being a “desert flower”.

Despite admitting her love life was virtually non-existent in recent years, she said she was regularly "pursued" by younger men more than half her age.

“Life and love is like the ocean. Sometimes the tide is in and sometimes the tide is out, and sometimes it's like the frigging Mojave,” the mother-of-three told an American magazine.

“Where's the tide now? For me? Mojave! Fortunately, I like the desert. I'm a desert flower.”

“I really get pursued by men in their 20s, like a lot.”

The actress, who won a Golden Globe in 1995 for her role in Casino, added: “They probably know there's food in the fridge and that somebody's going to talk to them and ask them how their day was."

Despite regularly voted as one of the world’s most beautiful women, she admitted she did not appreciate her looks until after watching herself in the 1994 film Basic Instinct, which made her a star at 34.

She played a bisexual author who is accused of murdering men, in plots appearing to be taken from her novels. Her sex scenes with co-star Michael Douglas were considered raunchy at the time.

"I turned to one friend and I was like, 'look how great they made me look. It's unbelievable’,” she told More magazine.

“He goes, 'that's how you look’. I'm like, ‘no, no. Really. Look what they did’.

"He says 'would you shut up? I'm trying to watch the movie. That's how you look’."

But she added: “I couldn't get hired because no one thought I was sexy.”

She also confessed to self-doubts.

"We all go through it. We wrestle all day long with: How am I unlovable? Am I too tall, too short, too thin, too blonde, too brown? Why is my life not perfect?’,” she added.

Stone, who has survived a brain haemorrhage, admitted her 2001 health scare came about due to her failing marriage to Phil Bronstein, whom she divorced in 2004.

After getting injections on her lips, she admitted she “looked like a trout” and vowed not to get plastic surgery.

She has previously insisted her own glamorous good looks were entirely natural and were down to exercise and good genes.

She is currently the face of Dior's anti-ageing skincare range.

“You know, I'm still wearing a bikini. That's my bathing suit,” said Stone who is a UK size 6-8 but never diets.

“I'll be wearing leather pants when I'm 70 because that's my style.”
