SDFL/Wicklow Cup gets off to a flying start

THE New SDFL/Wicklow Cup competition got under way over the past weekend with games taking place in both Dublin and the Garden County. A mixed bag of results over the two days meant that neither league dominated the other and results are as follows.

Ballyowen Park Saturday U12 Champions League Group (A)

Liffey Valley Rangers.. 3 Greystones United "A"...2

A narrow win for Liffey Valley Rangers in the opening game of the new SDFL / Wicklow Cup when they came out on top over Greystones United by the odd goal in five with goals from Taidgh Curran, Ryan Mooney and Miguel Ferreira.

Blessington FC "A" ........1 Arklow Town "A" .......4

Arklow Town raced into a 3-0 half time lead and never looked back. They added to their tally in the second period and the only consolation for Blessington was a Ben Fitzsimons strike.

Group (B)

Knockmitten FC ..............7 St Anthony's FC .........0

A cracking result in the third game of the day on Saturday as goals from Morgan Phibbs, four, Jack Nolan, three and Tony Kennedy had Knockmitten well in command.

Collinstown FC .........1 Wicklow Rovers "A" ..........3

A bad start to the new SDFL / Wicklow Cup competition as Collinstown FC went down 3-1 to a decent Wicklow Rovers in Group B of the Champions League.

Sunday January 18th, U12 Champions League Group (C)

Beechwood FC "A" .............1 Rathnew AFC .............1

Rathnew win 3-1 on penalties

CHRISTOPHER Doyle proved to be the hero of the hour when he saved three penalties in a shootout to decide the outcome of the this clash, after the sides ended 1-1 at full time.

Rory Donoghue had put Beechwood in the lead in the opening had with a brilliant half volley but they failed to add to their tally and paid the ultimate price with five minutes to go as Rathnew Eoin Doyle won his side a penalty and slotted home the spot kick himself. So it was straight on to spot kicks where Eoin, Reece Doyle and Shane Marah scored from the spot and Christopher did the rest with his saves.

U12 Championship Group (A)

Park Celtic ...............3 Wicklow Rovers ................1

PARK CELTIC were full value for their win over Wicklow Rovers in the Under 12 Championship when they ran out 3-1 winners. The Celts raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Dan Cambell and Sam Collins but Noah Sheridan pulled one back for Rovers to make a game of it. However, Park were not to be undone and added a third through Felix Gilchrist to seal victory.

Rathcoole Boys FC "A" ....3 v Arklow Town "B" .....0

Goals from Sennan Turner, Jake Collinn and Oisin Smith were enough to see Rathcoole Boys through over Arklow Town.
