Rocker Rod's now a grandad

Rod Stewart's daughter Kimberly has given birth to a baby girl, making the rocker a grandfather for the first time.

Father-of-eight Rod (66) was at the Los Angeles hospital for the birth, with his wife Penny Lancaster and ex-wife Alana Collins, who is Kimberly's mother.

TV star and model Kimberly (32) got pregnant with Oscar-winning actor Benicio Del Toro's baby, but the pair are no longer together.

The baby, who is yet to be named, weighed 8lb 9oz,.

Hillsborough secrets debate

An online petition calling for British ministers to release Cabinet papers about the Hillsborough football disaster has hit 100,000 signatures -- enough to trigger a debate in Parliament.

Footballer Joey Barton led a campaign on Twitter that boosted the campaign.

It calls number or the release of all documents about Margaret Thatcher's discussions on the 1989 tragedy in which 96 Liverpool fans died.

Other celebrity signatories include footballer Michael Owen, musician Billy Bragg, actor Simon Pegg and comedian Dara O Briain.

Tamla hitmaker Ashford dies

songwriter Nickolas Ashford, who wrote Ain't No Mountain High Enough and I'm Every Woman with his wife Valerie Simpson, has died, aged 70.

Ashford, who had been treated for cancer, died at a New York hospital.

Ashford and Simpson wrote hits for Tamla Motown including Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's classic Sixties duets Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing and You're All I Need To Get By.

No drugs truce -- vows Mexico

Mexico has rejected calls for drug cartels to join a truce, saying the gangs must be arrested and disbanded.

Security spokesman Alejandro Poire said: "Peace is not going to be achieved by asking the criminals for something."

He was reacting to a call made by Alberto Lopez Rosas, the attorney general of the violence-wracked Guerrero, who asked the cartels for a truce.
