Robber sent back to prison

A YOUNG man who has been described as "institutionalised" has had the two-year suspended portion of his robbery sentence reactivated at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Dean Gray (22) of no fixed abode, has seven previous convictions for robbery and was out of prison a number of weeks before committing two similar offences on a Spar shop and pharmacy.

Gray pleaded guilty to robbing €355 cash from a Clarehall Spar shop on June 6, 2009 and 360 Diazepam tablets worth €7.32 from a Clontarf pharmacy on June 8, 2009. Judge Ryan adjourned sentencing on Gray's latest offences.

€4m Daffodil Day appeal

The Irish Cancer Society today called on the public to help it raise €4m during its national fundraiser.

More than 3,000 volunteers will take to the streets across the country tomorrow for Daffodil Day.

All monies raised from the sale of flowers and daffodil pins will fund free patient care services for people with cancer, from diagnosis through to end-of-life care.

BA expert on terror charge

A British Airways computer expert will appear at the Old Bailey today accused of terrorism.

Rajib Karim (30) of Newcastle, was arrested while working for the airline's call centre in the city.

Karim will make his first appearance at the court after being remanded in custody by magistrates in London. He is accused of three offences alleged to have happened between April 13, 2006, and February 25 this year.

Fan fighting extradition

A long-running legal battle by an England football fan against extradition to Portugal to serve a jail term returns to the High Court today.

In February Garry Mann, from Faversham, Kent, was given a temporary reprieve after his case went all the way to Europe. His case will be heard in London today.

Mr Mann was given a two-year prison sentence for his alleged role in football-related violence in the Algarve resort of Albufeira during Euro 2004.
