Rice relives the shock goal that shook the Lane
STEPHEN RICE admits he was as surprised as anyone else to see his name end up on the scoresheet for Shamrock Rovers against Spurs last night.
The Crumlin man is a key figure for the Hoops but is not renowned for his goalscoring ability – just one goal in 24 league games this season and only two goals in all competitions this season – but he was proud of his finish last night.
Gary McCabe’s free kick rebounded to Pat Sullivan and the shot from the full back, who was Rovers’ goal-scoring hero |in Belgrade, got a slight touch from Rice to beat Carlo Cudicini between the Tottenham sticks.
“I normally get a nosebleed when I’m up in the box like that, I don’t score all that many goals,” Rice joked.
“It wasn’t a toe-poke.
“I knew the ball was coming at me so I had to get just a |touch to help it into the net.
“I knew the keeper was behind me and that if I got any sort of touch on it, it would upset the keeper as he wouldn’t see it, so I tried to get a little touch and thankfully it worked.
“The second Sully hit it, I knew I had to try and get |a touch.”
