Rescued swimmer fights for life

A swimmer was left fighting for her life yesterday after being swept out to sea.

The woman, aged in her 30s, was swimming with three friends off Laghcloon, north of Lahinch, Co Clare, when she got into difficulty.

The naval vessel the LE Aisling was on patrol in the area and was asked to join the search by the Irish Coast Guard.

A search team boarded a rigid inflatable boat at 3pm and rescued the swimmer ten minutes later.

She was brought to Liscannor Pier where she was treated by a resuscitation team before being airlifted to Galway Hospital by the Coast Guard helicopter.
