Patient stabbed in hospital grounds dies from injuries

A WOMAN patient was killed in a stabbing incident in the grounds of a psychiatric hospital in Waterford last night.

The woman, in her 50s, was a patient at St Otteran's Hospital in the city.

The incident occurred about 7pm in the grounds of the hospital and the woman died as a result of her injuries.

Arrested

A man, who was known to the victim, was arrested shortly afterwards.

The man is also believed to have been a patient at the hospital.

He was last night being detained in Waterford Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

St Otteran's, which was build in 1835, stands on extensive grounds and parts of the old building are no longer in use.

The State Pathologist was notified and the scene cordoned off and preserved fora garda technical examination.

A post-mortem is expected to be carried out on the deceased later today.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the death and have appealed for witnesses.
