Pádraig teed up to erase 'bitter' Singapore memories
FRESH from his victory at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, Pádraig Harrington will tee up in this week's Singapore Open determined to banish the memories of his "most bitter loss" in 2008.
Harrington captured his first title since the 2010 Iskandar Johor Open when he saw off the American Major-winning trio of Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson in his last competitive outing two weeks ago.
Victory in Bermuda gave Harrington's confidence a timely lift ahead of this week's US$6million tournament at Sentosa Golf Club, in Singapore, where the three-time major champion feels he has unfinished business after losing out to Indian Jeev Milkha Singh by a single stroke in 2008.
Harrington led by one shot with three holes to play, but made costly bogeys at the 16th and 18th holes - both in unfortunate circumstances - to hand victory to Singh.
Harrington, currently in 34th place in the Race to Dubai, said: "In 2008, it was probably my most bitter loss on a golf course."
SNOOKER: Ronnie O'Sullivan has hinted his sabbatical from snooker could mean "the chapter's over".
O'Sullivan announced yesterday that he will not compete again this season, a move attributed by his manager Django Fung to "Ronnie's own personal problems, his health, travelling, children, family and so on", and one which casts doubt on whether he will be seen on tour again.
tennis: Roger Federer reached yet another career milestone with victory over Janko Tipsarevic on the second day of the ATP World Tour Finals. Swiss Federer glided to a 6-3 6-1 victory over Serbian Tipsarevic to open his Group B account, taking his haul of victories at the elite year-ending event to 40, having qualified for an 11th consecutive year.
Another silky display from the 17-time grand slam champion took him past the record he shared with Ivan Lendl, the level of his play suggesting the 31-year-old world number two is still the man to beat at the tournament he has won a record six times.
CYCLING: Last year's Giro d'Italia winner Michele Scarponi has been suspended by his Lampre team for visiting banned sports doctor Michele Ferrari, the Italian outfit said yesterday.
"The team doctor has suspended the rider for violation of the internal code of the team," team spokesman Andrea Appiani revealed.
BOXING: Ireland's female boxers lost six bouts in a row at the quarter and semi-final stages of the European Youth and Junior Championships in Poland. Hanna Carthy, Oliwia Samsanow, Christine Gargan, Kayleigh Murrihy, Caoilin McCormack and Niamh Folan, who was competing in the 75kg semi-final, lost out.
