Women are much more unpredictable in choosing what's sexy in a man

WHEN it comes to being sexy, age really is nothing but a number.

Heartthrob actor Robert Pattinson (26) has retained the title of the Sexiest Man in the World for the third year running.

Combing through the list of the top 50 sexiest men (all in the name of research, I assure you), I realised that women are consistent about one thing in their taste in men -- their inconsistency -- whether it's age, profession, muscle definition (or lack thereof) and so on.

Pattinson's Twilight co-star, the impossibly pretty Taylor Lautner (20) and sexiest list stalwart Ryan Gosling (31) both make the cut alongside the surprising Benedict Cumberbatch (36) and curveball Robert Downey Jnr (47) in at number six.

With our culture's new obsession with cougars and their cubs it's little surprise to see such variety in a list of the world's sexiest men as voted by the average woman.

TV presenter Caroline Flack (32) made it acceptable for 18-year-old Harry Styles to be considered sexy - when most women throughout the world could clearly see it, but thought it to be wrong.

And readers of Glamour magazine clearly took note as the curly haired singer scraped his way to the number 21 spot.

While there is a fine line between jailbait and geriatric, women don't seem as concerned as men about picking out the 'obvious' choices of sexiness.

For example, David Beckham (37) and Chris Hemsworth (29) both make an appearance but neither come close to reaching the top 10, despite their conspicuous good looks.

We have made 'regular' guys into bonafide sex symbols, including the incredibly average looking R-Patz.

When a men's magazine rounds up their sexiest women of the world issue, I can usually predict quite accurately who will be in their top ten - Megan Fox (26), Scarlett Johansson (27) or some incredible looking European woman who we have never heard of but men have been drooling over and worshipping for the past 12 months.

Essentially, it's a compilation list of beautiful women out of the average man's league.

But women seem to be looking for something entirely different and are much more unpredictable when it comes to what we consider sexy in a man.

In general, the Glamour Sexiest Men Alive list is a fairly typical rundown of Hollywood hotties -- least surprising of which is Co Kerry 35-year-old Michael Fassbender's jump to the number four spot.

For those of you who have seen Shame, this will come as no shock.

What this proves is that women really do want it all: the curly-haired cutie with the dimples, the rugged action star, the sensitive, brooding actor.

Come on guys, that's not too much to ask, is it?
