We need to act fast on killer bug

Health authorities must move swiftly to combat the mystery respiratory illness that has killed six old people in a small nursing home, five of them within five days.

Minister James Reilly had talks with the Health Information and Quality Authority, which has sent experts to Nazareth House, in Co Donegal.

It is now hoped that scientists at the National Viral Reference Laboratory will quickly identify the nature of the illness,.

While quarantine measures in force at the nursing home in Buncrana are to be welcomed, families with relatives living there are justified in expressing their concerns.

A growing number of people are living in nursing homes around the State and families everywhere will be seeking information on the threat of contagion posed by this mystery bug.

Dr Reilly must ensure all available manpower and resources are focused on this disturbing development.
