Too little and too late from the Bishop

BISHOP John Magee's apology to victims of child abuse in his former diocese was his first public comment since the Cloyne Report was published five weeks ago.

This belated response came after the report was highly critical of Bishop Magee for his handling of allegations of clerical sex abuse in his diocese. It found that the Minister for Children was misled by claims that Church guidelines for handling abuse cases were being fully complied with in the diocese. It also found the Health Service Executive was told that abuse allegations were being reported to the gardai.

The Bishop's statement failed to account for what was revealed in the Cloyne Report and leaves many unanswered questions.

It is not good enough that we had to wait weeks to hear from the bishop. His words are unlikely to provide much comfort to the victims whose abuse happened on his watch.
