Lifeguards in Galway may soon have the power to seize alcohol from drinkers on the city's beaches, if proposed bye-laws are passed. If it happens those laws should be adopted by counties all around the country. Every summer our beaches and green spaces get turned into pubs, then tips by inconsiderate drinkers. There's no need to ban all drinking but we should do the same as they do in US parks - you can drink, but you have to operate under the principle 'leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but photos.' We should be pushing the same summer culture here. And if that means taking the booze from those who make themselves a nuisance, then great.
