Sport lifts our spirits yet again

Many congratulations to Michael O'Neill and his brave Shamrock Rovers side on their historic win in Belgrade last night.

It was a stunning display from the Tallaght side and their appearance in the group stages of the Europa League will be a massive boost to Irish soccer and to the city.

The club will now benefit from over €1m in prize money and, if last night's dramatic 2-1 victory over Partizan is anything to go by, they should acquit themselves well against the top sides in Europe.

It was a perfect way to kick-start what should be a great sporting weekend in the capital.

The eagerly anticipated clash between Donegal and Dublin at a packed Croke Park will see one side qualify for to meet Kerry in the All-Ireland.

And before that is the small matter of Ireland against England at the Aviva tomorrow.

Once again, sport has shown its ability to lift people's spirits.
