Public faith in gardai is being tested

IT'S hard to see how things could get worse for An Garda Siochana. The resignation of Commissioner Martin Callinan over the penalty points controversy sent shockwaves through the force yesterday.

But hours later this was followed by a fresh controversy centred on allegations that conversations in garda stations were recorded over a number of years.

As the Government moves to appoint a replacement for Mr Callinan, the recording allegations are now set to dwarf the penalty points issue.

Some of the alleged recordings, which date back 30 years, are likely to have serious consequences for court cases.

The speed with which the Government has set up a Commission of Investigation indicates show serious this is.

In the wake of these two huge controversies, the public's faith in An Garda Siochana is now being sorely tested.
