Payouts to Flynn are a disgrace

People will feel angered today at our story revealing that the wife of corrupt Padraig Flynn is entitled to receive thousands of euro in forestry grants from the public coffers. We reveal today how the couple have been receiving lucrative State payments each year in return for cultivating a forest in Co Mayo.

According to the Mahon Tribunal, part of the 100-acre site was bought in Mrs Flynn's name in 1998 using IR£50,000 that was intended as a donation for Fianna Fail. It appears there is no way to stop the premium payments.

Until instruction is received from the gardai, the DPP or the Department of Justice, the payments to Mrs Flynn cannot be stopped. The matter needs to be urgently examined. Taxpayers should not have to fund these payments in the light of the damning findings against Padraig Flynn by Mahon.

Killer's escape was a travesty

Mistakes were clearly made in the case of a garda killer who walked out of an open prison, having escaped from the same place before. The report into the circumstances surrounding the escape of Martin McDermott from Loughan House open prison make for grim reading. This, after all, is someone in jail for killing Garda Gary McLoughlin. Lessons must be learned.
