Letters: The way to go for much safer cycling

I want to commend the members of Dublin City Council for their leadership in calling for a new law that will help to save the lives of Dublin's cyclists. Here in the United States, 14 states have laws that require motorists to give cyclists at least three feet clearance when overtaking.

I want to commend the members of Dublin City Council for their leadership in calling for a new law that will help to save the lives of Dublin's cyclists. Here in the United States, 14 states have laws that require motorists to give cyclists at least three feet clearance when overtaking.

And, over the next few years, we hope to have such laws in all 50 states. Like Dublin, in many of our cities in states that do not have the law, city leaders are championing the cause. Why? Because lives can be saved.

A law requiring motorists to provide at least 1.5 metres clearance when overtaking cyclists creates an excellent tool for educating motorists and gives them a frame of reference for what is considered to be a safe passing distance.

Make it happen, Dublin.
