Letters: Pay per preach

I don't think anything says more about the times in which we live and the dreadful state into which the Catholic Church has fallen than the fact that people are actually being charged to attend religious services held for the Pope during his trip to England.

How crass is that? At a time when people are struggling to pay mortgages, are unemployed and see no way out of the cash-obsessed world in which we live, you now must PAY to hear the word of God.

Who knows what would have happened had His Holiness been present for the Sermon on the Mount; no doubt he would have been touting tickets for that gig as well.

As the Church reels from one scandal to another, this humdinger shows how out of touch it now is with ordinary worshippers and, sadly, with the teachings of our Lord.
