How many hospital beds or teachers could embassy pay for?

Can the Government give us one good reason why we should be funding an embassy in the Vatican in this day and age?

Because here's two good reasons why we shouldn't.

The first is the Vatican's role in the cover up of child abuse by priests, as eloquently outlined by our Taoiseach in the Dail earlier this summer.

The Vatican's response to this state's legitimate request for an explanation was entirely expected, i.e. denial.

The second good reason is the cost. We own a wonderful building which is both embassy and ambassador's resident in the ancient city -- recently valued at €25m. Think how many hospital beds or special needs teachers could be funded from the proceeds of the sale.
